B-movie director Ed Wood Jr. is beloved by classic horror fans and bad movie connoisseurs alike for his crazy low-budget horror and science-fiction films of the 1950′s. Ridiculed at the time, titles such as Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959), Bride of the Monster (1955) and Glen or Glenda (1953) are now hailed as underrated surreal classics by many cult cinema buffs. What is not so well known however is that alongside these now famous films Ed Wood also tried his hand at producing a number of low-budget T.V. pilots which he hoped would be picked up either by a network or syndication company and finally bring him the success he craved.

One of these short films was called Final Curtain (1957) and was intended to launch a supernatural horror anthology series called Portraits of Terror which sounded similar in concept to the later Twilight Zone(1959-1964) created by Rod Serling. This short horror film starred Plan 9 cast member Duke Moore and concerned an actor who makes the mistake of exploring a theatre on his own late at night. Ed Wood himself even makes an appearance (in make-up and a blonde wig) and the film itself was considered lost for years until finally turning up in the home of a memorabilia collector amongst some old film cans.

There are even rumours circulating that Wood wrote and directed a second pilot episode for Portraits of Terror although nothing has turned up as yet! In the meantime, you can now finally see this long-lost piece of cult film and television history for yourselves. For your viewing pleasure, episode one of Portraits of Terror – Final Curtain…..
